Discover More About Your Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

Whether you're driving an automatic transmission vehicle around Grapevine or Coppell or you love the challenge that a manual transmission provides throughout the Dallas - Fort Worth (DFW) area, you'll want to make sure that your transmission and clutch are serviced and maintained along the way.

What Is A Transmission?

To put it simply, the transmission's main job is to maintain the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels, adjusting as you speed up or slow down. An automatic transmission does this on its own, while a manual transmission has to be shifted with the clutch by the driver.

Four Common Transmission Services

There are four common transmission services that are generally performed according to the timeline of your BMW car or SAV.

1) Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange

Changing the fluid in your transmission is necessary and is recommended to be performed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. The transmission fluid runs through the transmission, lubricating every part along the way. Eventually, this viscous fluid will break down or become dirty due to the heat and friction that occurs when you drive. This dirty fluid will need to be replaced in order for it to work correctly.

How is the fluid changed? First, the drain plug is removed, and the fluid is drained. New fluid is added, and the plug is inspected and reinserted.

2) Automatic Transmission Filter And Fluid Replacement

If the filter requires a change as well, you'll want to opt for a filter and fluid replacement. The filter will become dirty over time and, if left unchanged, won't take out the debris from the fluid. This could result in larger and more expensive damage to the transmission itself.

Changing the filter starts with removing the transmission pan and switching the filter for a new one. The gasket material is also replaced, and the transmission pan is put back. Then a fluid exchange is performed.

3) Manual Transmission Service

One of the biggest differences between an automatic and manual transmission is the clutch. Because of this extra part, manual transmission service is more complicated and should be performed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

The process for manual transmission service starts with draining the fluid and evacuating it from the entire system, especially the clutch. Once new transmission fluid is put back in, and the plug is replaced, then the clutch is inspected. If the clutch needs to be replaced as well, that repair is performed.

4) Complete Transmission Service

Available for both transmission options, a complete transmission service covers every detail of the transmission. The process includes:

  • Transmission fluid replacement
  • Transmission filter replacement
  • Transmission sump and pan inspection
  • Transmission pan cleaning and material replacement (if needed)
  • Clutch inspection (if applicable)
  • Inspection for friction damage or metal particles

When Should I Replace The Clutch?

When the clutch in your manual transmission starts to fail, you'll notice a few different warning signs. These include odd noises whenever you shift, harder acceleration, sticking or spongy clutch, and more. If you notice anything is off with your transmission, you'll want to schedule an appointment with a service center. Replacing a clutch is a simple process, but one that does have many different steps involved.
